When moms of littles ask me for advice, I always tell them, it really is the little things that mater.Reading them bedtime stories. Taking them to the library. Dancing to fun music. Taking them to church. Engaging in conversation as you drive them around. Shopping for groceries and showing them how to interact with people, places, and things.Life with little ones can feel monotonous some days. My little sister and I used to call it Groundhog Day as we repeated the same routine again and again. But when I look back, I’m so glad I hung in there for Groundhog Day. I’m glad I spent a lot of time with my kids in that season of togetherness before they headed in different directions. I’ve heard it said that 75% of the time we spend with our kids in our lifetime will be spent by age 12. With 4 kids, I spent a lot of time in the car. My car was our second home. From beach trips to school pickups to driving a carload of teenagers, it holds a ton of memories.My favorite memories are the conversations that spontaneously happened. The prayers I prayed over them as we drove to elementary school. The stories I shared to help them navigate people and teach them to trust their gut. The encouragement I gave after someone had a bad practice and burst into tears because they felt discouraged. The deep conversations that randomly surfaced at the most unexpected time.These days, I just have 1 child to drive. I love driving her and her friends because I only have 2 more years of making memories with them in the car. So to you young moms in the thick of it, feeling like your car is your second home, hang in there. A ticking clock inside my head tells me time is running out; I have only a few more years to “fix” them and prepare them for life. The pressure feels intense because their future is on the line, and as I watch other parents launch their kids, I feel an urgency in my heart.This triggers anxiety in me. It makes me spring into action before going to God in prayer and asking Him to take the lead.I’ve also been guilty of seeing my daughters as extensions of me. At times I project my thoughts, emotions, and experiences on them.
